What to expect from an Italian massage studio.
January 22, 2026 · Marta T.K.
If you've only ever booked a massage in your home country, an Italian studio can feel a little different. Nothing dramatic — just a few small habits worth knowing in advance.
Booking
Most independent studios work by appointment only and reply by WhatsApp rather than online forms. A short message in English is fine. Confirmations usually take a few hours, not minutes.
Arriving
Arrive five minutes early — not earlier. Many studios are small, with a single room and no waiting area, so an early arrival can interrupt the previous session.
Language
At Lume the practitioner speaks English. Across the city, most professionals working with international clients speak at least basic English. A few words of Italian — buongiorno, grazie — are warmly received but never required.
What to wear
You'll undress in the same room, in private, while the practitioner steps out. Underwear is kept on or off according to your preference; the body is always covered with linen except the area being worked. The Wat Po Thai treatment is the exception — it is practiced fully clothed.
Tipping
No. Tipping is not part of the Italian wellness tradition and the price you see is the full price. A polite thank-you and, if you wish, a return booking, are the natural form of appreciation.
After the session
Take your time getting up. A glass of water is normal, a quick shower at home later in the day is ideal. Avoid heavy meals or alcohol immediately after.
