Wat Po Thai massage in Florence — the tradition behind it.
January 29, 2026 · Marta T.K.
The phrase "Thai massage" has become a category — and like all categories, it hides more than it reveals. The tradition we practice at Lume is something more specific: the lineage of the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok.
The temple
Wat Pho is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Bangkok, and the home of the most respected school of traditional Thai medicine. Its massage tradition was codified centuries ago in inscriptions still visible on the temple walls. From that lineage, training spread — but not always faithfully.
The Sen lines
Wat Po work follows the Sen — energetic lines that, in the Thai tradition, run through the body in a precise pattern. The therapist does not press random points; they follow these lines with thumbs, palms, elbows and feet, opening them in a sequence handed down for generations.
The rhythm
A real session is not fast. It is slow, almost meditative. There are stretches that resemble assisted yoga, sustained pressures held for many seconds, transitions that look like a quiet dance. The body comes off the mat looser, taller, less burdened.
How it differs
What you find under "Thai massage" in many wellness centers is often a hybrid — some pressure, some stretching, an oil rub at the end. A Wat Po session is none of these. It is practiced clothed, on a firm mat on the floor, without oil. The work is the work.
